Design Approach
The design of Villa M2 began with the view rather than the building form. Instead of creating a conventional house with selected windows facing the landscape, WALL Corporation organized the plan so that the main spaces participate in the panoramic experience of the site. The long horizontal roof became both an environmental and architectural device: it shades the façades, defines outdoor living areas and emphasizes the relationship between the house and Kigali's landscape.
2022
Villa M2 is a contemporary four-bedroom hillside residence in Kigali, Rwanda, designed by WALL Corporation. The 614 sqm villa uses a composite steel-and-concrete structure and is organized around panoramic views of Kigali, floating roof planes, shaded outdoor living spaces, and a double-height entrance.

Contemporary Villa Architecture in Kigali
Villa M2 is a contemporary private residence designed by WALL Corporation on a hillside site in Kigali, Rwanda. The 1,994 sqm plot overlooks the city, and the architectural concept was developed around one primary objective: allowing the principal living spaces to benefit from the panoramic views of Kigali.
The house has a total construction area of 614 sqm and contains four bedrooms across two levels. The ground floor accommodates the main living spaces and opens toward the landscape, while the upper level is deliberately more compact, containing the guest bedroom and home cinema.
Architecture Shaped by the Kigali Landscape
Rather than treating the view as a feature of only one room, the plan was organized so that the principal spaces maintain a visual relationship with the surrounding landscape.
Large glazed openings connect the interior spaces with the garden and distant city views. The architecture extends horizontally toward the landscape, reinforcing the relationship between the house, its site and Kigali's hilly topography.
Floating Roof and Shaded Outdoor Living
One of the defining architectural elements of Villa M2 is its extended roof plane.
The roof and floor slabs visually project beyond the enclosed walls, creating the impression of floating horizontal planes. The extended roof provides shade to the glazed façades and creates a protected semi-open terrace facing the view.
This transition space between interior and garden allows outdoor living while providing protection from Kigali's strong sun and changing weather conditions.
Double-Height Entrance
The main entrance is positioned on the road-facing side of the villa and opens into a double-height entrance hall.
A large pivot door forms the focal point of the entrance. Its timber finish continues across part of the façade as a geometric screen, visually integrating the entrance door with the architectural composition.
Above the entrance, the roof extends outward as a cantilever, creating a sheltered arrival space.
Indoor–Outdoor Living
The landscape is treated as an extension of the architecture.
Living areas open toward the garden and panoramic views, while shaded terraces create intermediate spaces between enclosed rooms and the exterior.
A separate area of the garden incorporates a private gym and outdoor kitchen, extending the everyday functions of the house beyond the main enclosed volume.
Structure and Material Strategy
Villa M2 uses a composite structural system combining steel and reinforced concrete. The structural strategy supports the project's long horizontal roof lines, cantilevers and open façades while allowing the architecture to maintain a visually lightweight character.
The resulting residence combines panoramic views, shaded outdoor spaces, large openings and strong horizontal architectural elements to respond to its hillside setting in Kigali.
