How will robots influence the future of design processes and the built environment?

已更新:2022年7月2日

Changes will be seen with the use of robots in the construction area at different scales ranging from building scale to city scale. The use of robots in structures will have an impact on climate change as well as on the borders of humanity’s imaginary about Space.

Thanks to robots, building solutions that require fine workmanship and craftsmanship will have the opportunity to be realized easily without requiring extra labor cost. The decorative facade coatings in the buildings will have the opportunity to be built much faster and with more complex geometries than the development of the interior designs so far. At the same time, it is possible to install floor supports with different geometries which never used until now.

There are certain times required for craftsmanship when building the building. As the robots can work for 24 hours, construction times will be much shorter. Building time will be shortened and more buildings will be built in less time. Through robots the existing building stock in the world will increase rapidly and cities will start to host more buildings. While the potential of building stock to increase rapidly in the world is an advantage for poor regions, it will cause green areas to decrease and global warming in most regions.

The quality of workmanship in Europe and America will rise to the same level as the quality of workmanship in Africa. The problem of quality of workmanship in the buildings can only be eliminated thanks to robots.

The assembly architecture will be improved as it can be more comfortable through the combination of robots and production parts. Especially factory buildingsand affordable

housing structures are the first typologies of the structure that will be affected and accelerated by robot production.

As these structures are built within the framework of certain standards and repeat without tendency to go beyond these standards, they will be the fastest construction typologies that robots can exert. Since the building typologies such as museums, art centers, private houses etc. are non-standard production structures, they will not be the primary areas where the effect of robots will be felt. Production with robots will also eliminate different groups of craftsmanship that require different expertise for different construction phases. the same group of robots will make plaster and bricks, make paints and apply facade coating.

Robotic Arms

The situation of building that requires manpower is now only possible as assembly in space. Thanks to robots, it will be possible to build in space very easily and the process of building cities on the Moon and Mars will be accelerated. This will accelerate the process of discovering possibilities on other planets.

Building in places without gravity such as Mars and the Moon will also make the development of architecture to a point where it has never been. The practice of constructing, which always requires a compulsory compliance with certain column distances, will go into a period that can be called a column-less structure. In this way, different architectural typologies, architectural sections that have not been tried so far, will be revealed.

Environmental criteria such as the direction of the sun and the wind will be replaced by other contexts in space design. There will be very different architectural education from today’s architectural education. the carrier system requirements they need to learn will have a color that no one has ever used. The environmental factors that shape the design will be dealt with otherwise in the conditions of the completely new planet.

City typologies, which have been described since antiquity and ended in modern cities today, will have the opportunity to develop with brand new systems in a very different way. As these cities cannot be established in human space, we will try to learn a new urban design thanks to robots.

Space Cities

According to the needs of the people who will live in the cities that will be established with robots in space and live here, the cities will lead to the establishment of new countries that will grow and develop. The urbanization period in space will begin as you enter a new date period starting from zero.

The relationship between the buildings will not be the same as in the classical cities, and forms of structures that can establish neighborhood relations independent from gravity will emerge.
